Eastern Veil Nebula, Network Nebula, NGC 6995

 

The Veil Nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion that took place an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 years ago.  The nebulosity pictured here is located in the constellation Cygnus and continues to expand as a result of the original explosion and is the only remaining visual remnant of the original star.

 

The color image is a combination of exposures through red, blue and green filters which are combined and a monochrome, unfiltered "luminance", layer is layered in over the color exposure to bring out highlights and detail.  The luminance layer can be seen below.
